I've been experimenting quite a lot with paint recently whilst working on The Sketchbook Project. I know I posted some of these pictures below as part of the sketchbook, but I thought I'd post bigger versions of them as well.

I have also been given some 'failed' polaroids to vandalise by the Brighton based photographer Andy Wilson. I'm not finished with the series yet, but here are two to have a look at in the meantime:

The Sketchbook Project 2012

I decided to take part in The Sketchbook Project 2012 a while back, and I've only just sent mine off to the Brooklyn Art Library in New York. It will be included on a tour to 14 different art spaces across the US and around the world. When it returns it will be catalogued and kept in the Brooklyn Art Library along with thousands of other sketchbooks.

If you've never heard of The Sketchbook Project before you can read more about it here. It's a project open to everyone, not just artists. You pay a small fee for your sketchbook and choose a theme that you would like to work with from the long list thats on the website. When you receive your sketchbook you will see that it has a unique barcode printed on the back, as well as your name, location, and chosen theme. The barcode makes it possible for the library to notify you every time somebody takes a look at your sketchbook!

I think it's a great initiative. It gives you the excuse to experiment and do your own thing for a while. It's also a really good way of getting your work out there for other people to see.

Below are some photos I took of my sketchbook the night before I sent it off. I gave myself a lot of freedom with this project, and didn't worry about whether it was the best work I'd done or not. I just had a lot of fun with it, and ended up with something a bit crazy and unexpected. But hey, that's what sketchbooks are for in my opinion.

We are the 5% Zine

Josh's friend Chris, who he works with at Red, invited Josh and I to contribute to a zine he was curating. The theme was 'We are the 5%', which refers to the creative industry making up 5% of all industry in the world. It's also a bit of a reference to the 'Occupy Wall Street' movement, and the fact that most of us in the creative industry are part of the 99%.

When I got home from work today, a big white envelope was waiting for me with the most recent issue of DIVA magazine inside of it! I did a illustration for a column called 'Diatribe' a little while back, which can be found in the December issue of the magazine. The column talks about the 'LGBT community', and what it means to different people. DIVA is a lesbian lifestyle magazine, and can be purchased from your local shop or supermarket, or via the DIVA website. Here are a few different versions that I did for them, as well as the final image printed in the magazine:

I can't wait to sit down and read the magazine this weekend when I finally have some time off. I thought it was very nice of them to send me a free copy in the post, it was a great surprise and made my day so much better.

I can now call myself a published illustrator, how exciting!

Getting back into things

During these last few weeks I've been trying to get back into making work on a regular basis, as I need to get used to being creative even when I'm not working on set projects or commissions. There are a lot of things going on at the moment: Kat is making us a brand new website for our collective, which will look great as soon as it is up and running. I have had my first illustration commission for a magazine, and I have also been in touch with a nice little artist shop here in Brighton who are interested in selling some of my work, as well as a web gallery that will hopefully be selling one of my prints some time during the next few weeks. I will get back to all this later, and make blog posts as soon as I have more to tell you.

Today I joined LinkedIn after a friend told me about it. I don't know if I'll use it much, I guess time will tell. I said I'd never join Twitter because I thought it would be too confusing, but I use it quite regularly now and think it's a great place to find out about interesting people and their work. Aspex Art Fair was a great experience, and I am glad that I was invited to take part in it. One of the girls suggested that they should set up another one around Christmas, which I thought was a brilliant idea. I met some really lovely and talented people this weekend, and I thought the volunteers at the gallery had done a good job of arranging it all. They were all very friendly and helpful and made it a pleasant experience for all the artists involved. One to watch is Emma Seymour with her hand embroidered illustrations. Some day, I will own one of her pieces! They are absolutely beautiful. Here are some photos from the event:

You will have to excuse the quality of the photos: I could only bring my little camera as I didn't have room to bring my DSLR as I had far too much to carry with me on the train from Brighton to Portsmouth anyway.

I have decided that I want to start up my own little Etsy shop soon, where I will be selling a selection of my prints. Watch this space for more information.

I am happy to say that I have been selected to participate in an Art Fair which will be held at the Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of September (11 pm - 4 am). I am very excited to meet the other artists and anyone who comes along to have a look-see. I am sure there will be some great work for sale, after having looked at some of the other participating artists' websites last night. I'm extra excited to be doing an Art Fair alongside one of my best friends: the talented illustrator Laura Wolfram, who was also invited to partake in the Art fair.

Run by a group of volunteers, this is the very first affordable Art Fair to be held by Aspex and it will give artists from Portsmouth and the South East region the chance to show and sell their work at the gallery. Among the 18 selected artists there are recent university graduates plus emerging and more established artists - which will be reflected in the variety of art and the wide range of prices. The work on sale will range from £5 to £500 so there will be something to suit everyone.

The volunteers organising the Art Fair are all arts graduates who are currently working at the gallery. Organising the event has been part of their placement and they have worked together on all the arrangements from finding and selecting the artists through to setting up the venue. They will also be on hand to host the event.
The Art Fair will be admission free and visitors will have the chance to meet the artists who will be present to discuss and sell their work. Some of the work will also be displayed at the Lighthouse - a newly opened building just opposite Aspex.

New work space and large scale collage piece

As some of you may know I have just recently moved down to Brighton. Therefore I thought I'd show you my new work space, as well as a large collage piece I made during the first week in my new apartment. I got so inspired one evening when I was walking home and saw some really amazing street art, and I had a strong urge to create something myself.

It's a much bigger format than what I usually work with, but I found that I quite enjoyed working on a bigger scale. It gives you the freedom to experiment, and you stop worrying about tiny, insignificant details.

I thought the Pop Up Design Shop and Gallery looked pretty good when it was all set up, and there was a great variation of things to see and buy: photographs, fine art and collage pieces, postcards, ceramics, furniture, bags, cushions, rugs, jewelry, light boxes, lampshades, bikes... all under the same roof! I met some great people during set up, which I hope to stay in contact with, and I also hope that we can all get together and do it again some time. This was just the start in my opinion. I would like to thank Graham and Suzie Brown for all the effort they put into making it happen. Also, a big thank you to Kat for minding the gallery. Here are some pictures from the event:

Winchester Pop Up Gallery and Design Shop set up

After the Degree Show I received a phone call about whether I would like to be a part of a pop up gallery and design shop that was going to be held in the Brooks centre in Winchester in a few weeks time. The gallery and shop were going to be set up in two vacant shop spaces on the second floor of the shopping centre during Winchester Fashion Week. I thought it sounded like a great idea so I met up with Graham and Suzie Brown to show them more of my work, and to decide what to display and sell in the gallery. Me and Kat (who also had some of her photographic work in the gallery) helped set up the shop and gallery, and ended up completely covered in paint every day! Our work tasks were painting custom cut wooden shapes that were going to be used as table tops, as well as painting walls and MDF boards white. Here are some pictures from the process:

WSA Graduate London Show + PDYE @ The Rag Factory 2011

I was lucky enough to be selected to have some of my FMP work featured in this years WSA graduate show in London, as well as in the PDYE show which was arranged and set up by Let's Recuperate.

The PDYE (Pounds, Dollars, Yen, Euro) brief was all about value, and we were asked to produce a poster especially for the show based around this theme. I chose to illustrate the Queen mother because of the simple fact that many people in and outside of the UK value the royal family and the monarchy, and the Queen mother is quite an interesting character to draw.

Each poster was limited to a run of 50 prints which were available to buy. Every print ranged from £1 to £20 depending on how many were sold on the opening night. The price for the first 15 was £1. For the next 10 the price was £3. £6 for the following 10. £10 for the 10 after that, with the last 5 selling for £20.

I still have a few left and I'm selling them all for £6 each. They are nice quality risograph prints done by Hato Press. Let me know if you would like to buy one.

Courage Have Courage t-shirt design

Courage Have Courage are a great band from Guernsey and are all friends of Josh. When they asked Josh and I if we could make them a t-shirt design we said yes right away and started mocking up different ones. They were interested in having animals as the main theme, and a stag was one of the ones they wanted the most. They chose the last design of those below to go on their t-shirts, and started off by printing 40 for their tour. The last thing we've heard is that they sold them all, which is brilliant!

Music Is Not A CD: Violent Dreams

During my last year at WSA we were set a brief by design collective JULIA called 'Music Is Not A CD'. We had to think of ways to reinvent music promotion, i.e. not just designing an album cover. I chose to make a book based on Crystal Castles' latest album and called it 'Violent Dreams'. I let myself be inspired by the feel and atmosphere of the music, and decided to do some research into witchcraft to feed my creative process. I got the book professionally printed at the end of the project. Here are a few photos of some of the pages, as well as the printed version:

Print Matters

I thought I'd do a post about this event even though it happened ages ago. I never got round to mentioning it on here. Print Matters was an exhibition of artist's books, publications and zines at the Hartley Library in Southampton that me and the rest of the members of Sauce Collective were lucky to be a part of. A selection of our individual zines, as well as a few zines we'd collaborated on, were featured in the show. There was even a bit written about us in the catalog, which was pretty ace. They had also photocopied some of the pages from our zines onto pink and blue paper and stuck them up on the wall, which I thought looked quite cool. Zeene IV: Dogs

So this evening I have decided to have a major catch up session and blog about all the things that I didn't have time to whilst still at University. Now that I have graduated I actually have time to sit down and post some pictures on here. My first post is about a zine that I contributed to a good few months ago: Zeene IV: Dogs. The guys at Zeene asked if anyone would like to draw some dogs for their next zine on twitter, and I replied that I would be up for the task. I believe they asked Kanye West as well, but he didn't want to draw any dogs unfortunately. I wonder how much the price of the zine would have gone up if he had actually drawn a dog for it... Anyway, the guys were really sweet and sent me the 3 back issues of Zeene, as well as a few of the issue which I had contributed to, in the post. Here are some pictures of it:

Penguin Book Cover Competition 2011 (final book cover design)

After the making and photographing of the work I decided to go with these two photographs and use them for my front and back cover. The image on the front cover captures the moment where the yellow flowers are falling all over the town. I chose to only feature one single house as the story takes place in the same house, generation after generation. I wanted it to stand alone, as if in solitude.

There are things written in the book that make us question whether Márquez ever meant Macondo to be interpreted by the reader as a real place, hence the house being gone on the back cover but the yellow flowers still lying on the ground. I wanted to illustrate the uncertainty of the village being real. I ended up with this as my final design:

After my model houses had been built I needed to capture the moment when the yellow flowers (I used yellow petals) fall from the sky and down onto the village. Penguin Book Cover Competition 2011 (process)

I entered the penguin book cover competition this year, but did not end up on the short list unfortunately. However, my fellow student Tom Rainford did, so a big round of applause for him! His design looks great and you can see it here.

We were asked to create an eye-catching and contemporary new book cover for 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by Gabriel García Márquez.

l wanted to focus on a small section in the book that really moved me and put me in a special kind of mood:

“A short time later, when the carpenter was taking measurements for the coffin, through the window they saw a light rain of tiny yellow flowers falling. They fell on the town all through the night in a silent storm, and they covered the roofs and blocked the doors and smothered the animals who slept outdoors. So many flowers fell from the sky that in the morning the streets were carpeted with a compact cushion and they had to clear them away with shovels and rakes so that the funeral procession could pass by.”

I wanted to recreate this moment visually, so I decided to build model houses and make my own little town where these flowers could fall. Here are a few crappy pictures from the process:

Recently I have been very busy, as people who read this blog might have noticed by the lack of blog posts and the space between every time I do post anything. I promise to update my blog during the coming weekend with my latest work, and I also plan to make a blog post on my room, which is where I like to work. I will introduce you to all the little bits and pieces that inspire me. Here is a little taster:

I was given this beautiful piece of work made by my talented best friend Laura Wolfram, and I absolutely love it. The pink plastic cuckoo clock is from Urban Outfitters, and it's probably the tackiest kitsch item that I own.

For my house mate Kat's birthday we went to Aldresford to have a little look around. There was a very cute little boutique there called 'Lavenders', where I bought this beautiful card:

It was made by a company called V V Rouleaux (which is a ribbon company if I'm not completely wrong). When I bought it they put it in a bag made out of recycled Indian newspaper. On the label it stated that the bags had been made by an NGO whose main objective is to provide education and shelter to street children. So as well as looking awesome, they are eco-friendly and they help get kids off the street. I think this is a brilliant idea, and that more shops should do the same. Manifesto project

This years first brief was to write a manifesto about yourself as a creative, and to create some images to go with it. One of the points in my manifesto was to always be on the look out for materials that I can include in my work, either bought or found. Gathering found material is a very important aspect of my working process, and I feel that the more found material I use in my work, the more unique it will be. Anyone can buy the same piece of card from a craft shop, but found things such as a piece of your grandmothers curtain won't be found in many other peoples work. Found material has 'soul', it is often stained and worn; marked by the life it has lived. Using found material in my work is also good for the environment. I am recycling discarded material and giving it a new life. On their own these bits and pieces are worthless, but by putting them together I feel like I am giving them renewed value and beauty.

I had a really good time at the London Zine Symposium together with the other members of the Sauce Collective, and I can't wait to do it all again next year. A broken home

This is a 3D box I made for my self initiated project. It's supposed to illustrate the fact that many serial killers come from broken homes where their days have been filled with emotional and sexual abuse from the people who were supposed to be their primary caretakers. I like the tackiness of it, but it won't be amongst my finals.

OBSESSION

During these last weeks I have been working on my self initiated final project based around the word 'obsession'. I have been researching serial killers and read about their obsession with murder, their crimes, their nature, and their tragic childhoods. I developed a whole bunch of collages inspired by all the things I read about, and here they are. I have now transferred 6 of these collages onto wooden boards using Lazertran paper, and I will post some images of them after I have had my crit on thursday.

Pyrography might be my new obsession

You know I never ever really blog about anyone else's work apart from my own on this blog, but this girl has inspired me so much with her beautiful pyrography work that I thought I'd mention her on here. Her name is Genevieve Dionne and she lives and works in Vancouver in Canada.

Her work was featured in the most recent book I bought called 'Illustration Play'. In the book she says that: "My drawing style has always been very linear. When I saw a woodburning tool at a craft supply store I realized how lovely it would be to actually burn the line into the surface. I quickly fell in love with the colour and quality of the line, as well as the cozy smell of toasting wood."

Genevieve doesn't have her own website yet, but you can check her out on flickr. I find it quite peculiar that I haven't heard of her before now considering how talented she is, but I bet you she'll be well known in a couple of years.

Anyway, I love the style of her work so much that I decided to buy myself one of these:

For those of you who don't know what this is: it is a pyrography machine, or a 'wood burning' machine. Pyrography is the traditional art of burning into wood or leather. Both of Genevieve's pieces below were created using this method. Aren't they beautiful?

I will probably receive my pyrography machine in a couple of days, so I'll keep you updated about how it goes and if wood burning is anything for me! Thanks for the inspiration Genevieve!

For the last project we had I decided to work 3D for the first time to see if it was something I enjoyed. Turns out I really like it and will be doing more of it in the future. We were asked to create a character inspired by a chosen place. The character was supposed to represent the 'genius loci' (spirit) of the place, and I chose the dump. My dump creature is made out of many found objects : his legs are old exhaust pipes, his fur is an old rug which I stained with a mixture of coffee and tea, his face is decorated by broken china plates which I found at the dump, and he has old cutlery hanging from his body. My main inspiration for this project was the extremely talented sculptor AJ Fosik, who makes amazing wooden constructions of animal heads and such. His work should definitely be checked out! Here are some pictures of my dump creature taken in the WSA photographic studio (thanks for helping me Kat). Also thanks to Chantal and Grant for helping me set him up in the studio, it was quite a task! Hope you like it!

D&AD screen printed posters!

As you might or might not know I was so lucky to be one of the students selected by WSA to be entered in the D&AD student awards 2010. I decided to go ahead and screen print my final poster, but it was harder than I thought. After many attempts and failures I managed to produce three which I was pleased with. You know what they say, practice makes perfect! I'm really glad i did it now though, because I now know the process of screen printing, which is a great thing to know! Please wish me luck in the competition!

Winchester Gallery Exhibition
